There is a certain expectation with an Isabelle Huppert performance, you know she will be bridging her best. I remember one TIFF q and a for Greta where she very politely but directly acknowledged that her character was a monster. Despite Huppert’s maybe flippant claim about that particular role, she always uses her skilled acting technique to create unique characters. This is of course evident in The Richest Woman in the World where Huppert excels playing the titular richest woman in the world.
This film follows Huppert as Marrianne Farrere, a wealthy woman who is becoming increasingly close to a younger gay artist. With her family concerned about financing her friend’s extravagant life the film is loosely structured as a documentary being made about this scandal. The film loosely based on a real case struggles a bit with its format; the conceit seems to be followed randomly and not consistent to particular time periods. The result isn’t as biting of a satire as it should be, a mystery that is muddled despite the wonderful performance by Isabelle Huppert.
